National Hispanic Recognition Program Honors Two Lufkin High School Students

Contact: Sheila Adams, Director of Communications & Public Relations (936)630-4246

Lufkin, TX--The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) acknowledges Lufkin seniors Marco Rosales and Edgar Escobedo as academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students selected from about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT®. Hispanic/Latino students who take the test are from the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Mariana Islands and the Marshall Islands, as well as U.S. citizens attending schools abroad. The organization does not provide a financial reward but being selected is a huge honor, one that is important to colleges particularly interested in communication with academically outstanding Hispanic and Latino students.

In order to be eligible, there are certain requirements that students must meet according to the NHRP website:

  •         Take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of your junior year in high school.
  •        Be of at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino descent.
  •        Achieve the minimum required PSAT/NMSQT cutoff score (this index score may vary by state, region and territory each year).
  •         Achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher by the end of your junior year.
  •         Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551.

Lyndia Austin, Counselor and Coordinator of the Career and College Go Center at Lufkin ISD said, "Marco and Edgar are both outstanding scholars at Lufkin High School. They have chosen rigorous academic courses that reflect their determination and goals."

She said, "Both students are aware of colleges that provide scholarships for National Hispanic Scholars such as the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Texas A&M University, to name a few.  Marco's first college choice is Baylor University because they have academic scholarships that are based on your rank and SAT or ACT scores. Edgar Escobedo is applying to Columbia University and the University of Texas at Austin. Both young men are diligently working on applications and scholarships."
